People have been asking me “Mr. Trump, when are you going to say something to the Muslims?”
I say to them, “Muslims don’t like us, ok? What should I say to them? Stop committing terrorist acts against us just because we love freedom? Because we love liberty? What do these people want from me?” But then I realized I probably should say something because when I’m President, the Muslim world is going to have to know who Donald Trump is. So I wrote something down- took me 20 minutes tops- and I showed it to my friends, and they all said the same thing: “Donald, it’s a great essay, you have to publish it. You really speak for all Americans on this. People will love it.”
In fact, even my Muslim friends said to me “Donald, it’s great. Even though we know you are not a Muslim, it still seems like you understand the Muslim mindset, and even Muslims are gonna love this. It’s almost as if you think like a Muslim, Donald.” I seem to have a knack for connecting with people.
The Muslim world doesn’t like America, okay? Some of you- I’m talking to the Muslims now- it’s true, are freedom loving people. But a lot of you simply don’t share our values. You say America oppresses its women. You talk about American foreign policy. You talk about how America sends money to Israel for their military. You talk about how America went into Iraq and Afghanistan and destroyed the region. You talk about how America selectively enforces democracy.
So let me tell you loud and clear: The people who are doing these terrible acts may do them in the name of America. But they do not represent America.
I understand that there are a few radical extremist Americans that grab all the headlines in the media when they do these sensational acts. But please, do not judge an entire country by the actions of a few who distort America for their own ends. There are millions and millions of Moderate Americans who do not invade Iraq; who do not support Israel; who do not care if other countries are democracies or not. The small group of people who actually do these terrible things do not represent America. They are completely misinterpreting what it means to be an American. And they are using America to achieve their own political aims.
Now I know that many of you have heard claims in the media that there are verses in our laws that support these terrible actions committed in the name of America. Or people will go on anti-American websites and blogs that cherry pick verses, such as Article 1, Section 8: “Congress has sole power to declare war… and make rules declaring captures.” They ignore the fact that every nation has laws like these. There are laws that are far worse on the books in other nations.
And they ignore peaceful verses like this one from the Declaration of Independence:
“All men are created equal… are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among them, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
It simply could not be more clear: America is a nation of peace. And America was sent by God to bring liberty and freedom to all mankind.
Of course, that does not mean that Americans are not allowed to defend themselves. But our laws only give us the right to do so in self-defense, or in cases where American interests are threatened. And even then, we follow laws of combat that are amazing for the times, believe me. We avoid harming women and children whenever its convenient. We give aid to civilians and help rebuild their countries. But to use our laws to justify an aggressive, imperialist foreign policy simply has nothing to do with America. Nothing at all.
Some of you may be thinking, “But Donald, the good verses in the American laws do not cancel out the bad. The Constitution still allows Americans to justify war way too easily. Americans need to repudiate these verses.” My answer is simple:
Have you read our laws in their entirety, or have you just cherry picked a few of them and taken them out of context? Do you have any academic qualifications? Have you talked to any scholars? Please, do not talk about America if you have no knowledge of America!
If you want to help defeat radical Americans without inflaming anti-American bigotry and Ameriphobia, the best thing you can do is learn something about America. Read the Constitution. The Declaration of Independence. Common Sense by Thomas Paine. Anything by De Tocqueville. Don’t judge America by the actions of Americans, or by what the media says. True America is what is in those texts: in the Constitution, and in the Declaration of Independence.
Now I know that many America-haters will selectively point to certain aspects of American history as “evidence” of America being something other than a nation of peace. They’ll talk about how we enslaved Black Africans. They’ll talk about our treatment of Native Americans. What they fail to recognize is that the practices of human bondage and aboriginal genocide were common at the time. It is simply not fair to judge 18th century America by 21st century standards. The times back then were totally different.
Look at the revolutionary example of our Founding Father, George Washington (may God rest his soul). He was an ordinary farmer. He married an older, wealthy widow. He was known for his honesty and good character. He won victories on the battlefield against incredible odds. After he defeated the British, he could have become the most powerful king in the world. But he refused. Instead, he created a revolutionary new form of government, for the people and by the people. He served two terms as president, and then he walked away from power. He was a great, great American. And we should follow his example by copying exactly what he did, in all spheres of life.
I know a lot of America haters like to pick on the fact that George Washington owned slaves. But they always leave out the fact that he treated them very well, and that he freed them all upon his death. So please do not insult our first president by telling lies about him. Or by drawing him.
Look at the American Golden Age! Look at how many Americans contributed to developments in science and technology. A lot of people don’t realize that it was an American who discovered electricity. It was an American who invented the light bulb. It was an American who invented the automobile. America was doing these things while Muslim nations were practically in the dark ages.
I realize that America today is not in a good state. What happened to America? Our values were corrupted. We stopped following true American values. We elected bad leaders who took us away from true American ideals.
But the good news is the key to our resurgence is so simple. We simply have to follow what it says in the Constitution, and follow the example of George Washington and the other Founding Fathers. That’s the best guide.
And what can you, the Muslim world, do to help Americans?
Learn about America with an open mind. Talk to an American. Stop slandering America. Stop insulting America. Stop encouraging hate towards Americans and fanning anti-American sentiment. When you do that, you insult the traditions of millions and millions of peace-loving Americans who love America- many of whom are Muslims, by the way. And more urgently, you are only empowering the radicals who wish to corrupt American values.
Oh and one last thing: you say American women are oppressed. Why don’t you talk to an American woman, instead of speaking for her? Find out if she thinks she’s oppressed. Most American women love American values and the freedom and protection it provides them.
Now, am I saying that there are never any instances where women are sexually exploited or oppressed in other ways? Of course not. This happens in America, we know that. But these are tribal practices. They have nothing to do with America. America is a nation that respects women’s rights and values them. Is it really fair to blame America just because some “Americans” do not honor women the way America requires them to? America liberated women like no other country before it. And the way America treats women is absolutely perfect and should never be changed, ever.
And what do I say to those who still hate America, even after an explanation like this? Well, think about what happens when you spit at the moon. You can’t hurt the moon, and your spit only comes back and lands on your own face. You only hurt yourself. And despite all the misinformation people are spreading about America, America is still growing stronger every day. We have more people who want to become citizens of our country than all other countries combined. People from all over the Muslim world in fact, want to become Americans, and are turning towards America every single day.
Every day, more and more people are embracing America. And God willing, America will continue to grow strong and spread America’s message of peace and democracy to all mankind.
