My hijab may cover my hair. And my hairline. But that is MY choice. It’s MY decision. NOBODY is going to take that right away from me. And even if I do choose to wear hijab, you better believe it’s not going to cover the huge chip on my shoulder. So sit down and listen up, and let me teach you a few things about Islam.
These days there is a lot of talk by certain Westerners trying to “save” Muslim women from Islam. Do I look like I need saving? Do I sound like I need saving? The reality is: I do need to be saved, but it’s not from Islam. Let me tell you what I need to be saved from.
I need to be saved from a culture that only values me if I display my naked body to everybody, all the time, because that’s what Western women do. If I choose not to succumb to Western brainwashing that only values my body and not my mind, who are you to judge? Where do you get off?
I need to be saved from a culture that tries to tell me 24/7 that I am only valued as a woman if I act like a man. From a culture that sells us unrealistic expectations and then mocks us when we fail to meet them. From a culture that gives us all the freedom in the world, but not an ounce of direction.
No religion values women’s rights more than Islam. Nobody in the history of humanity did more for women than the Prophet (pbuh), and I am proud – so proud – to be a Muslim carrying on that tradition. And if you’re a Western woman reading this, thinking I’m the one that’s oppressed, you’ve got it backwards. I’m the one who feels sorry for you. You should check yourself and see where all that feminism has gotten you.
And to all those people who just love to point to cultural practices of Kenyans, Sudanese, Pakistanis, Afghanis, Egyptians, Saudis, Bengalis, Somalis, that they have brought with them to Islam, just think about it for a second. Think about how many female heads of state we have had in this country, which supposedly has so many opportunities for women like me. And take a look at how many have been appointed in Muslim countries. Look at Benazir Bhutto, for example.
So please, stop trying to save me, and start working on yourselves. And if you think Muslim countries are so bad, go visit one and see how happy the women are over there. That’s what I plan to do very soon, insha’Allah.
