When The Moon Split is the account of the coming of age story of a raving sociopath in the tribal murderland of 7th century Arabia. The dry and desolate desert landscape provide the perfect mirror for the soulless portrayal of the main character, Mo the Mad, played to chilling effect by Michael B Jordan (Creed, Fantastic Four).
Directed by David Lynch from the screenplay by Paul Schrader, this is a tour the force of descent into madness and the cruelties it inflicts across generations. You will see no cinema like it before, visceral, suffocating, bloody with repressed sexuality underneath it all. Lynch raising his game to Scorcesse and Coppolla territory.
Oprah Winfrey, again in her few forays into acting, provide the moving portrayal of the wealthy widow whom Jordan’s character sucks into his web of deceit, cruelty, and madness. Quvenzhane Wallis (12 Years a Slave, Beasts of the Southern Wild) may well garner another Oscar nomination as the child-bride Mo covets. Christopher Walken in his best ever performance plays the uncle who has to watch the orphan child he raises turns into a monster he can never hope to control. This is a cast laden with Oscar-worthy performances.
