Mufti News has received an unprecedented amount of reader feedback regarding our “Batman covers” meme. The meme (which is reprinted below) was meant to serve as a friendly, hip reminder to young Muslims about what can happen when people do not follow the advice of Allah and His Messenger. Our meme was not meant to convey the idea that women who disobey Allah by not covering (even after knowing his requirements) deserve to be raped.

Rather, the meme was meant to remind women of the important part they play in avoiding the arousal of any un-Islamic feelings of attraction in men, who in turn must keep their desires bottled up until they can release them with their Muslim wives. Despite our noble intentions, some readers- sisters in particular- were not happy with how our message came across. We have reprinted one of the most thoughtful responses below from a proud young Muslim woman:

To the Admin or Admins of Mufti News:

How dare you?

May I ask exactly what was going through your mind when you posted such a stupid meme? Are you seriously suggesting that women who get raped are at fault for not covering their awra? This is the most misguided, misogynistic, hateful thing I have come across. And I’m on the internet a lot, so that’s saying something.

Rape is never funny. How dare you laugh at rape? Even a joke that is not really about rape, but just mentions the word “rape” is not funny. Even jokes that use the word “reap” are not funny, because the word “reap” is too close to “rape.”

Everybody knows the best way to address a sensitive subject like rape is to get really offended at anyone who brings it up in a politically incorrect manner. You are clearly a disgusting person who likes to laugh at rape and at Muslims, and I refuse to consider that there is any redeeming value in your meme. I know you keep saying that all of us who were upset by this are misinterpreting it, but some things are clear as day, and are just not open to interpretation. This meme is offensive, period. Some things can only be interpreted one way, and no amount of rationalizing will make a difference.

Trigger Warning: this meme uses the word “rape.”

Mufti News' controversial meme, that some readers thought meant Mufti News thinks rape is the fault of the victim.

Mufti News’ controversial meme, that some readers thought meant that our admins think rape is the fault of the victim.

Several people have already told you to take this post down, and you have not, which proves to me that you hate women. And it proves that you hate Islam, because you are giving Islam a bad image by suggesting that Islam condones this. So since you’re not going to take this down, let me at least educate you a little bit in the hope that you reconsider posting things like this in the future.

First, rape has nothing to do with what a woman is wearing. Muslim women who cover still get raped, because there are always going to be non-Muslim and bad Muslim men who cannot control their urges and who commit this crime. Second, Islam has done more for women than any other religion on the planet. In the West, all women are treated as sex objects. How disgusting is this? In Islam, women are elevated and prized, because their reputation is a reflection of the honor of their husbands and brothers. Subhan’Allah, see how Islam is so much better?

In the West, women are taught they have to give up their purity to be valued by men. In Islam, we wait until we find the right Muslim husband. And we are free to choose our husband also. Islam gives us the right to decline a marriage that we do not want. So when, for example…

  • if your father promises your hand in marriage in childhood to his best friend who is 40 years older than you;
  • if your husband has just been killed in battle and the leader of the opposing tribe has offered to marry you instead of allowing you to be enslaved along with the rest of your people;
  • if your husband’s adoptive father comes to your house unexpectedly and finds you beautiful, and your husband divorces you so you can marry his adoptive father;

… a Muslim woman always has the right to say no- although, if the Muslim brother in question is an exemplary Muslim, no real Muslim woman would say no, or perhaps she is not a Muslim woman herself! But clearly, Islam protects the right of choice for all Muslim women. Just like Islam itself maintains that “there is no compulsion in religion,” but promises Hellfire for those who reject Islam, Muslim women are completely free to choose whether they will obey their husbands as is required by Islam. Of course, there are consequences to every choice, but Muslim women are completely free to choose.

So admin, I don’t know how you can even face yourself, much less your wife, your mother, or your daughter, after your disgusting meme making fun of rape victims, and blaming Islam for it as well. Your ignorance is just unbelievable. Islam preserves the right of Muslim women to have dignity, modesty, and to be free of unwanted male attention. If some man does go so far as to commit rape, that is not the fault of the woman under any circumstances, and in Islam, the rapist is to be punished severely (as long as the victim can find a male witness or two female witnesses, and prove that the encounter was not consensual so that she is not punished for adultery).

Get a clue Mufti News! Stop condoning rape, stop hating women, and stop the Islamophobia.

From,

A Proud Muslim Woman

Mufti Comment: We appreciate this proud Muslim woman’s defense of Islam, but feel responsible to address her relatively liberal views on the choice of the woman in Islam. We must not ignore the words of the Creator:

Verse 4:3: and if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of (other) women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then (marry only) one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline (to injustice).

Verse 4:34: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

And the words of Allah’s Messenger, may peace and blessings be upon him:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri On ‘Id ul Fitr or ‘Id ul Adha, Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) went out to the Musalla. After finishing the prayer, he delivered the sermon and ordered the people to give alms. He said, “O people! Give alms.” Then he went towards the women and said. “O women! Give alms, for I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-Fire were you (women).” The women asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What is the reason for it?” He replied, “O women! You curse frequently, and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. O women, some of you can lead a cautious wise man astray.” Then he left.

Abu Huraira asked Muhammad that what if a girl doesn’t respond to her marriage what does it mean. Muhammad said “if she says nothing that indicates her permission”(Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 11, Number 2088)”

Men must know their place before Allah and His Messenger. And women must know their place before men. Some things cannot be misinterpreted, no matter how much one rationalizes.
